「焼酎飲み来んか？」、Hさんに呼び出されました。
Hさんの苗木定植を手伝いに行ったのは数日前のこと。定植は200本余り、何人かが集まって一気に植えていきます。こんな共同作業があった日の夜は、謝恩会が催されるものですが、僕はどうしても都合がつかず、飲み会には参加できませんでした。 この日呼び出されたのは、Hさんがそれを気の毒がって、一杯飲ませてやろうと思ったのだろう、そのくらいに思って出かけました。それが間違いだったわけではありませんが、別の理由もあったようです。 僕が鍬を打ち込んでいた園地から良く見える、向かい斜面にもHさんが耕作している園地があります。僕が鍬を振り下ろしているときに、この近くの園地での仕事がちょうど重なって、その様子を見ていたようです。 「農道もラック（モノレール）もない時代はよぉ、みんなこうして鍬で畑起こしよったんじゃ。お前エライわい。いま、そんなこと誰がすりゃぁ。除草剤使うか耕運機かけるか、すぐそれやろ。でもよぉ、鍬振り下ろして、このひと振りひと振りが自分のものになるっつってよぉ、思い入れが違わい。そんで鍬使うたらよ、土の中がどうなっているのか、土がどれだけの力を持っているのか、よく分からい。いやぁ、お前エライわい。このムラの原風景を見るようやった。感動した。みんな見よるけんの。オラもお前見習ってよぉ、このあいだ植えた苗木の周りに塹壕こしらえて有機物入れこもう思うてよ。今日はお前みたいに鍬打ち込みよったんじゃ。いやぁ、いい仕事した。こんな日の夜は焼酎の味が違わい。こんな仕事した日は、旨い焼酎の旨さがよく分からい。旨いのぉ。飲めや。飲もうや」 ほとんどしゃべりっぱなし。僕は聞いているばかりでしたが、旨い焼酎飲ませてもらいました。ごちそうさまでした。 （ゆ） On a day like today (All fine and good #4) "Want to come for Shochu (distilled spirit)?" Mr.H called me up. That was a few days ago when I helped him to settle the planting of a nursery of citrus saplings. There were almost 200 saplings, and some more farmers came to help him. Usually, this kind of group work is followed by a thanksgiving party at night, but I couldn't make it that night. When Mr. H called me this time, I just thought that he wanted to offer a drink because I missed the other day's drinking party. However, he seemed to have another reason, too. He seemed to like the way I was swinging the mattock that day. Actually, he has citrus field opposite mine, and he saw me work by chance. He started saying... " When there were neither farm roads nor monorails like today, everyone used to cultivate their fields by hand. You do it now, that's amazing. Who does such a thing today? Everyone casually uses the weed killer and cultivator, right? However, you put your heart into your field, swing by swing, and you gain something with each swing. And if you use a mattock, you can know what the soil underground is like and how much energy the soil has. Oh, dear, you are doing great. I felt like I saw the archetypal scenery of this village. I was impressed. Well, everyone will find the value of your work, my dear. I was so moved that today I trenched like you around my young trees with a mattock to put organic fertilizers. Oh my goodness, I feel so good after the work. At night, after a day like this, the taste of Shochu is different. I can understand the real taste of a good quality Shochu. Humm, this is really yummy ...take another glass. Let's drink together...." He kept talking like this forever, and I lent him my ears, but the Shochu was indeed really good.
