社会性がなければ、まちつくりではないと思います。そうでなければ、それは伝統とか慣習の範疇だと思います。それでも良い、という考えもあるでしょう。否定するつもりはありません。閉鎖性の中でのみ、育まれるものもあろうと思います。
僕たちの農業は、まちつくりだと考えています。でも僕たちは、まちつくりのために農業をしているわけではありません。 「農」とは、田畑の土をやわらかくすること、かたい土をほぐしてねっとりさせること、という意味の字だそうです。こういうことは、柑橘栽培において、ほとんどおこないません。それに対して、「栽」は植物のむだな枝葉を切って、ほどよく育てること、また植えることで、「培」は草木の根もとに土を乗せかけて育てること、という意味とのこと。これこそ僕たちの仕事です。農民と言うより、むしろ栽培民と言った方が正確な表現のようです。1920年(大正9年）におこなわれた職業分類によって『農業』が位置づけられて以来、この言葉を使わざるを得ませんが、それ以前には、もっと適当な言葉があったことでしょう。 農業者も消費者も、安心安全を簡単に口にします。しかし安心は、その人の心の問題だから、農作物の一生産者として、何ができるというものでもない気がします。また安全というものも、時代の気分や知識によって保証が変わりますから、追求するほどのものでもないと思います。 僕たちにできることと言えば、どのような栽培をしたのか、公開すること。そしてどのような考えに基づいてそうしたのか、表明すること。この態度に信頼を置いてくれる人との関係が、おのずと深まっていくことと思います。もちろん対話によって、僕たちの考えをあらためることもあろうと思います。 みかんの木の一本々々と向き合うのは愉しいことです。この木に生るみかんの数、重量によって収入が変わります。みかんがたくさん生った年は、けれど、売り上げが多くなるから嬉しいわけではないのです。実がつくこと、芽が吹くこと、そういった生き生きとした事実そのものに喜びがあります。これは大変個人的な感覚ですが、多くの栽培民に共通するものだと思います。 そんな考えでは食っていけん、と叱られるかもしれません。食っていけないのでは仕事する意味がない、と言う人もいるかもしれません。けれど生計を立てることが第一ならば、僕たちは農業を選ぶ必要もなくなってしまうのです。そもそもそんなこと、他者に威張って言うほどのことでしょうか。 栽培民だけでなく、職人、芸術家など、初源的な技術に携わる人々同士は、純粋な交流ができると思います。直接に関わらない人々、その中の一部の人が経済を生み出そうとするとき、ちょっとおかしくなる。しかもこうした、直接に関わらない人が大多数を占める世の中ですから、中間のずれが膨らむにつれて、無感覚的な、実体のない変な先入観が育まれるようです。 このことは、すでに親の世代から、第一次産業の現場に関係を持つことなく暮らし、育ってきた僕自身のことを振り返ると、よく分かります。生産と消費は、距離の上でも、認識の上でも、遠く離れていました。それが常識である時代を、これまで生きてきました。これでは安心は得られません。むしろ生産者も消費者も、お互いを馬鹿にし合うばかりです。 あいだをなるべく省いた、小さな世の中の方がよい。そのために様々な人々と出会い、交流していきたいと思っています。 僕たちが生活の拠点とするかんまん部屋が、その場所として、小さなムラのようになっていくことを、僕たちは夢見ています。これが実現すれば、それはまちつくりにほかならないと思います。この地域に根差した職業であり、すぐにこの段畑に反映されるのですから。そしてそれは、この地域だけのことではなく、多くの田舎に暮らす農民、栽培民、職人といった生産に携わる者にしか成し得ない、世界的な営みであるべきだと思うのです。 --- 家族で明浜に移り住んで、早3年が経ちました。これからも頑張っていきます。よろしくお願いいたします。 （ゆ） Live in the universe Community planning should have sociality. If not, that might become something like a tradition or custom. I won't negate even if someone says that's good enough; but there could be something that grows only within the closed nature. We don't engage in agriculture FOR community development, but I understand that our agriculture itself IS community development. I learned that Kanji (Chinese character) for "agri" means "to make soil in the field softer" and "to unstiffen solid soil and make it clayish". We hardly do these kinds of work in citrus cultivation. On the other hand, Kanji for "cultivation" has the combined meanings of "to take care of plants by planting, cutting unnecessary branches and leaves, and by putting soil over roots". This is what exactly what we have been doing. To describe us properly, it seems better calling ourselves "cultivators" instead of "farmers". We have been using the term "agriculture" since it was categorized in occupational classification in 1920 by the government, but before that there might have been more appropriate words for "agriculture". Both farmers and consumers casually claim about the safety of food in terms of mental and physical benefits. However, I, as one of the producers, can't do anything about the mental safety of foods because it depends on each consumer's mental state. While physical safety of food is not something to be pursued because the guarantee and certification system can be changed depending on the atmosphere of times and knowledge. So, what we can do is to be open about how we have been taking care of the products and to give voice to our philosophy behind that. If someone places his/her trust in our attitude, the relationship would get naturally deepened. Of course, we may have to rethink our ideas through such communication. It my pleasure to face each citrus tree. Our income depends on the number and weight of oranges of each tree. However, we are happy to see many oranges not because of more income, but the fact of existence of living fruits and new leaves. This feeling is really personal, but I believe it's quite common in many cultivators. Some may scold me saying "you can't make a living with such an idea", and other may say "if you can't make a living, what's the point of working?". However, if making a living comes first, we don't really need to choose being farmers. Is it something that I should complain anyway? I believe those who engage in primitive techniques, such as cultivators, artisans and artists, can have a pure communication with each other. When a part of those who don't touch such primitive work try to create economy, something goes wrong. And the thing is that our society has such people as a majority, so strange and shallow preoccupation tends to grow unconsciously, as the gap between primitive workers and the majority, gets bigger. I can understand this very well thinking back about myself who had been brought up by the parents who haven't had any connections with the first industry either. There has been a big gap between production and consumption sites in terms of both distance and understanding. I'd been living in the world where this gap exists as a common sense. However, I don't think we can get mental security from there. Rather, producers and consumers may tend to deprecate each other. I believe that the world should be directly connected and small with as less mediation as possible. For that, I'd like to meet various people and communicate with them. We have been dreaming that Kanman-beya, where we are base from, becomes like a platform and small "village"for that. If this really happens, it would be nothing but community development itself because our occupation IS based on this community. At the same time, the action wouldn't be just about this community, but also something common with other farmers, cultivators, artisans etc...who are producers.
