大忙しの収穫がひと段落して、最近は畑に切り落としたままにしている剪定した枝を、小切りにして回っています。次の柑橘の収穫が始まるまでの少しの間に、このような、ちょっとした仕事を進めます。
のこぎりを使うほどの剪定枝は小枝もそれなりにたくさんあるので、畑に置いたままにしておくとかさばって、草刈の時に邪魔になってしまいます。だから、小切りにするのは、仕事のための仕事と言えます。 そもそも草刈も、摘果や収穫に邪魔にならないようにするというほどのものです。同じ重労働でも肥料まきとは意味合いが違うような気がします。どんな職業でも同じことだと思いますが、この類いの仕事がたくさんあります。そしてそういった仕事を気分よく進めるために、剪定ばさみや草刈機の刃をきれいに研いでおいたりする。 仕事のための仕事との境界は極めてあいまいですが、本来の仕事の定義を狭めれば、精度はどんどんあがってくる。その分、日々の暮らしに食い込んでくるかもしれません。でも玄関先で剪定ばさみを研いでいれば、ちょっとそこまで出かけるご近所さんに話しかけられたり、お隣さんに干し柿をすすめたり、野菜を届けてくれるジイやんバアやんの顔を見られることだってあります。そのとき交わす二言三言は、僕にとっては価値があるなぁ。そしてその結果、仕事の能率は良くなります。 畑で小切りにしながらこんなことを考えていると、効率というのはそれなりに意味があるけど、それ自体にはそんなに価値がないのかな、なんて思い始めました。追い求めるほどのものではない。大雑把になるか、あるいは冷淡になれば達成できるような気がします。そんな風には、僕は単純にはなりたくないのです。 小切りにした太い枝は、十分に腐れば薪風呂を焚けるようになる。これも、価値がある。 （ゆ） Work for better work I cut branches into small pieces these days as busy harvesting is settled for the time being. This is the time for this kind of spot job before next harvesting starts in a while. There are many branches that are hard enough for me to use a saw and with smaller branches on each tip. When they are left on the ground after pruning, they will disturb us when we mow. That's why I cut them into small pieces to make following works easier. Come to think of it, mowing is also a kind of work that makes thinning and harvesting easier; preparation for following works. Mowing is actually a tough job, but its real meaning seems quite different from, for example, fertilizing. It can be said in all sorts of jobs that there are lots of spot works to be done before main work. In my case, sharpenning my pruner and grass mower is one of them. If we define "work" in the narrow meaning (ex. harvesting), accuracy and quality of "work" will be automatically improved. However, it may mean that you have to devote your off-time for works: works in the broad sense (ex. sharpening your scissors). Actually, I don't mind spending my off-time for those works, rather enjoy it. If I start sharpening my pruning scissors on a doorstep, our neighbors talk to me, I can offer our hanging-dried-persimmons to them and can meet the old who always bring fresh vegetables for us. The words which we exchange then are really valuable for me and, moreover, help me to improve efficiency of my "work" later. This is what I've been thinking these days cutting branches into small pieces. The more I think the more I start feeling that efficiency has a point, but itself doesn't have much value on. It's not something to pursue, at least. I feel that I could achieve it if I become unsubtle or emortionally cold, but I don't just become like that. When thick branches are cut into small pieces and rot enough, they can be used as wood fuel to heat water for a bath. See, it does count, too! Yuki |
