She is one of my friends from the University, and now settled in London with her husband. I hadn't met her for a long time, but she appeared here with her cheerful smile just like she had in her 20's.
When she asked me what I wanted from U.K. as a souvenior, I requested her to bring newspapers of various languages. Actually, I'd learned how to make eco-bags with newspaper before, and since then, my wish has been creating greater variation in the language on the paper. The bag looks really cool, indeed! (Once Makasa's breast feeding period is over, I'd like to join the bag-making-camp in Shimanto!)
When they arrived here, I said "Wow, thanks for coming all the way from London!" and she replied, "Yeah, your newspapers have been really heavy..!"...Ooops!
Since I was quite active outside the campus and took a year off from university to join NGO activities in the U.S and India, I used to have more friends outside the university. So, she is now one of the few close friends from the campus. I remember how hard she tried to study abroad, and now her efforts have lead her to a marriage and career in London. On the other hand, she said that she was surprised to have found me in Ehime, but after learning why we came to be settled here and having witnessed our way of living, she understood and everything made sense, she said.
I'm not sure when and where we can meet up next time, but it's a big relief to know that there is someone who understood me in the past, and also today, and now us as a family.

ロンドンより、友来る
友人のＵは、私の大学時代の友人で、今では結婚してロンドンに暮らしています。ずいぶん長い間会っていませんでしたが、20代の頃と変わらない明るい笑顔でここを訪れてくれました。
来日に先立って、ロンドン土産は何がいいかと尋ねられた時、私は「色々な言語の新聞紙をお願い！」と答えたのでした。実は、ちょっと前に、新聞紙でのエコバッグ作りを習い、それ以来色んな言語の新聞で作ってみたいと思っていたのでした。この新聞バッグ、見た目はシンプルですがかなりかっこいいんです。（（ま）の授乳期間が終ったら、四万十で行われている新聞バッグ講習キャンプに参加したいくらい！）
Ｕ夫妻が我が家に到着しての会話です。
「わぁ、ロンドンからはるばるどうもありがとう！」と私。すかさず、「も～ 新聞重いよっ」とＵ。おっと、失礼。
私は大学生時代、在籍していた大学の外での活動が活発で、それに国際ＮＧＯに参加してアメリカやインドで活動するために一年間休学もしていました。そんなこともあって、友人の多くは大学外の人たちでした。なので、Ｕはそんな中でも数少ない、大学で出会った友人。学生の頃、彼女が留学のためにとてつもなく努力していたことをよく覚えています。そんな努力の先に、今、いい人と出会って、ロンドンで働きながら暮らしているなんて。一方で、愛媛に移住した私をFacebookで見つけて驚いた、でも暮らしぶりを見て、移住の経緯を聞くにつれ、何だかとっても納得した様子。
次はいつどこで会えるのやら。でも、学生時代と今の私とその家族を両方知ってくれている人がいるということに、何だか安心感を覚えます。時と場所を越えて、末永く付き合ってくれる友人たちは、私たちの財産です。
