Umeo and Sukla had been wanting to draw many things on the white wall of our shower room. And today, the wall finally became their big canvas.
The colors should be fast so that they did not fade in the water, so I asked my grandfather, who is a painter and lives in Saitama prefecture, if he had any acrylic color that he didn't use anymore. And...he had!
Kids have powerful imagination that can take them anywhere. When they started painting on the wall, they sang and chatted as they were drawing, but soon became serious about doing it. I stepped out and tried not to interfere as much as possible.
When they said "done!", I was so delighted to see their art work. I felt something very happy from the balance of color combination and composition. I intended not to ask or guess what each one meant because an adults' explanation and logic can often disturb the kids' world. But soon, Sukla spontaneously started telling Umeo....
"This is a beaver, and this is a bird, oh, and these are actually steps...!"
It seemed like just his afterthought, looking each abstract, but indeed each one looked like a beaver, a bird etc....Umeo's works were more concrete, and there was a story in them. Great, go on playing with your imagination!
Having a view of those drawings from inside the bathtub is really exciting, too. Even Makasa gets excited to see them and starts pointing at them with a laugh.
Adults' imagination can't catch up with the children's. I always want to be aware of it and also respect it.
Wakana
お風呂でアトリエ・ムー
しばらく前からずっと、（う）と（す）はお風呂の白い壁に絵を描きたがっていました。そしてこの日、ついに壁は彼らの大きなキャンバスに。
耐水性のある絵具でなければならないので、埼玉県に暮らす画家である私の祖父に、使わないアクリル絵の具なんてないだろうか、と聞いてみました。すると、なんとあるとのこと！早速送ってもらいました。
子どもの想像力は力強く、彼らをどこへでも連れて行ってくれます。二人が壁に何か描き始めました。始めは歌ったり、おしゃべりしたりしながら、でもすぐにだまって真剣な様子。私はできるだけ邪魔をしないように、その場を離れました。
彼らが「できた！」と言って見せてくれた時、色遣いや構図から、何とも言えない嬉しい雰囲気が伝わってきます。あえて、それぞれの絵が何を意味するのかを尋ねたり当ててみたりということをしないでいました。大人の説明付けや論理が、時に子どもの世界を邪魔してしまうことがあるなぁ、と思うからなんです。そうするうちに、（す）の方から（う）に話し始めました。
「これが、ビーバーでね、これが鳥で、ああ、これが階段だね・・・」
どうやら、それぞれの抽象的な自分の絵を見ながら、後付けで想像しているようです。（う）の作品はもっと具体的で、それぞれをつなぐストーリーがありました。素敵ですね、想像力で遊んでる。
夕方、湯船に浸かりながら、一緒にあーだこーだ言いながら絵を眺めるのも、なんとも言えない楽しみです。（ま）も指差して笑いながら、なんだか嬉しそう。
大人の想像力は、子どものそれには追いつけない。いつだってそう自覚して、子どもの想像力に敬意を払いたいと思っています。
