 Since we met Kanika and "recycle sari Kantha blankets" in Kolkata in 2008, we, specially me, are big fans of these blankets. You can find various Kantha hanging as curtains at Kanmanbeya, and if you stay over night here, you will enjoy the soft touch of Kantha blanket. There are not just a few friends of us who have fallen in love with Kantha when they saw it here. F-san, our master carpenter of Kanmanbeya, is not an exception. Sometime in the last year, he called me up and asked to send a few Kantha blankets to his home in Hokkaido. He said that suddenly he remembered the soft feeling of Kantha blanket that he used here during his stay for the Kanamanbeya project in 2010. When I received his call, there was only one Kantha left with us unused. So, I immediately contacted Kanika in Kolkata and ordered a box-full of blankets. I sent a couple of blankets to him as soon as they arrived here from India, then soon after, a friend of F-san asked me to send some to her when she found the blankets in his house. When our guests see Kantha blankets at Kanamanbeya, many of them appreciate the work and time spent for the simple running stitch, design, and the nice feeling, and wish to take one or two with them. (It's just like me in Kolkata!) So, I've ordered Kanika another box-full of them last month again. Kanika is happy to know that Japanese people enjoy the Kantha products, and I'm happy to share the story behind the blankets with more people who appreciate and are excited about them. Wakana ちくちくちく その２ 2008年にコルカタで、Kanikaと「古サリーの刺し子ブランケット」に出会って以来、私たち（特に私ですが）はこのKantha（「カタ」と読みます。ベンガル語で布の意味です。）の大ファンです。かんまん部屋に来てみたら分かるのですが、カーテンとしてあっちこっちにぶら下がっているし、お泊りの時にはブランケットとして用意します。あの肌触りが何とも言えない！ ここでKanthaに出会った友人の多くが、Kanthaに興味を持って行きます。かんまん部屋を作ってくれた棟梁のFさんもその一人。去年のいつ頃だったでしょうか、ふいに電話をよこして、Kanthaブランケットを2，3枚送ってくれというのです。聞いてみると、かんまん部屋プロジェクトの期間にうちに泊まり込んでいた際に使っていたブランケットの肌触りを急に思い出して、恋しくなったのだとか。あいにくその時に、余っているものが一枚しかなかったので、すぐにコルカタのKanikaに連絡を取りました。箱一杯のKanthaが届いてすぐに、北海道に何枚か送りました。そのすぐ後に、今度はFさん宅で見て惚れ込んだと言って、Fさんの友人が何枚か欲しいと電話をくれました。 かんまん部屋へのお客さんが、ここでKanthaに出会って興味を持つ時、彼らの多くがその手仕事や細かい刺し子に費やされた時間を思って、しばらく静かにKanthaを眺めています。そして、デザインや肌に触れる感触に心ときめかせて、一枚か二枚自分の傍に置きたいなと思うようです。(コルカタでの私もまさにそうでした！）というわけで、そんな来客に備えて、先月またKanikaにもう一箱送ってもらうことに。Kanikaも日本でKanthaが喜ばれていることに心躍らせ、私もここでじわじわKanthaファンを増やしていることを喜んでいます。また、Kanthaの手仕事の思いを馳せ、わくわくしながら自分の一枚を選ぶ誰かと出会うことがひそやかな楽しみです。 （わ） |
