柑橘の栽培技術にも流行りのようなものがあります。「これがいいのだ」と信じてやっていたことも、数年後には全然違うことをやっていたりする。
新しい知見を得ると、どうしても試したくなるものですし、農業にも財務経営の考えが必要なことは言うまでもなく、ダメなものはダメと、結果が伴わなければ切り替えることも大切です。でも樹の方は、生産者の手入れ一つひとつが環境の変化であり刺激であるので、その方法がころころ変わるようでは、たまったもんじゃないでしょうね。
手入れの方法が変わるのはやむを得ないところがあるとしても、どういう農業をするのかということについては、なるべくきちんとした考えを持っていたいものです。社会の中で、自分の農業をどう位置づけるのか、ということですが、近いことを考えている仲間は、むしろ他業の中から見つかるのかな、と思います。
以前読んだことのある本をパラパラめくると、そのときにはなかった共感があったり、テレビで昔のインタビュー映像が流れると、「ああ、この人は若いときにこんなことまで・・・」なんて感心したりすることがありますが、土に触れたり、木と向き合うことを通じて分かってくるのは農業ではなく、社会そのものであったり、他者が別の体験を通じて見えてきたものと大きく重なるのでしょう。
机上の空論、なんていうのは揶揄する言葉ですが、それは案外、何かを分かった人にだけ出入りが許されたファンタジーの世界であり、幸せの想像力なのかもしれません。ただ、実践というのが、また別の世界のことだというだけのことで。

All fine and good
There are kinds of trends even in the cultivation technique of citrus fruits. Even if you believe in a certain technique today, you may be doing a totally different thing in a few years. It's natural that you want to apply new knowledge, and it's important to change what you've been practising in the field based on the financial performance as agriculture also needs financial management. However, it must be a lot of bother for the citrus trees if their condition gets changed so often. Every little thing that a producer does to trees creates an environmental change.
Changing cultivation techniques sometimes can't be helped, but I think I should have a proper concept about agriculture. It means that I should be conscious about where I locate my agriculture in the society. I sometimes find people who have similar concept of values in other fields of work.
For example, when I read a book that I've read long ago, I sometimes feel the sympathy that I didn't have before. Or, when an old interview appears on the TV, I sometimes come to think "Oh, I didn't know that this person had such a deep thought when s/he was young..". What I come to understand is that touching soil and communicating with trees is not agriculture, but it is society itself, and it may be linked deeply with what other people who learn through their experiences in their own fields.
"Desk theory" are words to be cynical about, but it might actually be a happy imagination and the world of fantasy that only limited people are allowed to enter, who have come to understand certain things. However, "practice" can't be ignored, and it's the story of some other world.
