Not only kids, but also adults got really excited to feel the special atmosphere of walking inside a tunnel which was still under construction.
The builders of the tunnel invited local people to look around through the tunnel on this day, which was on Route 378 connecting Akehama and Yoshida areas. Out of 687 meters, 565 meters had been excavated so far. When we arrived at the site, the official tour time was about to be over, and a huge number of people were just walking out from the tunnel. I got to know later that as many as 200 people were there! We, late comers, with small kids walked at our own pace after the crowd went out.
The dim but warm world was, - how can I put it?- as if we happened to be inside a huge monster's body... The ground was still muddy, and there were small pools of water here and there. At the end of the tunnel, we found a huge excavation machine drilling huge rocks. One of builders told me that they can drill several meters every day. Wow, it's really a long process...
If the construction work goes on as scheduled, it seems that we can go through this tunnel by car in the coming March. I'm sure that our kids will be amazed to know that it's the same tunnel that we observed on this day.

この穴の向こう
子どもはもちろん、大人も大興奮の不思議な空気の中のお散歩でした。工事中のトンネル見学会への参加です。
トンネル工事の作業内容を知ってもらおうと、施工業者が実施したもので、明浜町と吉田町を結ぶ国道３７８号線上にあるトンネルです。トンネルの全長６９７メートルのうち、約５６５メートルまで掘削が進んでいるとのこと。私たちが工事現場に到着した時には、解説付きの集団見学の一団が戻ってきているところでした。なんとこの日、200名余りの住民が見学会に参加したとのこと。ちびっ子たちと遅れてやってきた私たちは、集団が去った後、自分たちのペースでのんびり歩いて見学することにしました。
薄暗く、どこか生温かいあの雰囲気は、何と表現したらよいのやら。何か、巨大な怪獣のお腹の中に迷い込んでしまったような感じ。足元はまだぬかるんでいて、あちらこちらに小さな水たまりもありました。トンネルの一番奥では、巨大な掘削機械が巨大な岩盤を削っていました。この機械で、一日に５～６メートルトンネルを伸ばしているんだよ、と工事のおじさんの一人が教えてくれました。何と長い道のりでしょう。
工事が順調に進めば、工事は３月に完了する予定だそうです。次ここを通る時は、車ででしょうか。子どもたち、この日見学したトンネルと同じだと知ったら、きっと驚くでしょうね。
