(ゆ) Forest Kindergarten -visiting Talmary On the way to the event site, we took The Austral-Montane Zone (Sanyodo) expecting a great view of Gaiyo Islands and tasting the famous Onomichi ramen noodles. As for the way back, we also took The Boreal-Montane Zone(San'indo) so that we could see the view of Japan Sea and the Tottori Sand Dunes in Chugoku region, which we had never seen before. From Chugoku region to Shikoku region, we enjoyed the view of Shiwaku-shoto Island Chain, but the real reason why we chose this route was to visit a family in Katsuyama, Okayama prefecture. It was not so long back when we met this family for the first time. One of our good friends and neighbors, J-san, brought them to Kanman-beya last summer. They have been running a bakery named Talmary and used to have their shop in Isumi city, Chiba prefecture. Actually, we remembered that we had been to the shop and bought breads several years before. It was when we had just come back from India with little Umeo. Till we had a long chat over the Irori-fire place that day, we hadn't realized it though. When we visited them on the way back from Hyogo, we were just planning to buy their breads as souvenirs for our neighbors. However, they offered us not only a dinner, but also a bed for staying overnight. They said "why don't you stay so that we can drink and chat!". We happily accepted the kind offer, so our trip schedule was changed drastically. Well, we hadn't had such a flexible trip for a long time. One of the Talmary staff stayed with us till late, and we talked for a long time that night. Their techniques of bread making is not something that we can easily explain. Just having listened to their conversation about management of the shop and arrangements of their work, I felt like I had found a good book. Our discussions went into various dimensions from the topics of primary industry, that we had in common, to economics, history, culture, and so on. Time flew so quickly but comfortably, and when I looked up the clock, it was already next day! It was also my first experience to have Sake with pieces of bread as a snack. Well, that was totally Talmary style. In the next morning, we had a late breakfast together, then they took us to a local hot spring. What a hospitality they showed! When we headed for Akehama, it was just before noon. It's easy to have an ideal. However, it's difficult to pursue the ideal - that's what they have been doing in bread making. They must have had a kind of suffering when they couldn't really find an answer until and unless they reached some point. Or, they may have had difficulties to be understood by the public even if they didn't ask them to understand their ideal. However, they have been proud of themselves and kept making efforts. I would like to live in that way too, and wish to meet more such people. Katsuyama is a beautiful place. On the way home, we were talking about visiting Katsuyama again as a main destination. We reached Akehama early in the evening enjoying our local view from the top of Nofuku hill. Yuki |
