歩道に子どもらが集まって
道路の一点を向いている
何か言っている
そこへみんなが途端にかけよった
何人かは大声をあげているように見える
どうも僕は踏んづけてしまったらしい
ミラーに映った子どもの
悲鳴のような笑顔が焼きついてしまった
温かい 炊きたてのごはんの香りのように

かんまん部屋の前を流れる小川に架かっている、すぐ近くの小橋の下で、蛇らしきものを見つけました。
最初は引きちぎられて内臓が飛び出し、一部が腐敗して膨れ上がった死骸かと思ったのです。「うえっ」と通り過ぎたところで、けれど、こんなものはもっとよく見えるところまで引き出して、鳶かカラスに片付けてもらう方がよいだろう、と向きなおして再度見ると、飛び出した内臓だと思ったのはネズミのしっぽと足、まさに呑み込んだ胴体が含まれている部分が、頭部から膨れ上がっていたのでした。
こんなのは見たことがない。さあ、みんなで見に行こう、と声をかけ、家族みんなで道路からのぞき込んでいると、この道路を通りかかった人たちに、何をやってるんだと声を掛けられます。訳を話すと、「そうか！」「へぇ、オラもそんなの見たことないわ」、地元育ちにも珍しい出来事のようです。
出かけなければならない用事があり、最後まで見届けることはできませんでしたが、わずかの間に、もうネズミの足は見えなくなってしまっていました。用事を済ませて帰って来た時には、橋の下から姿はなくなっていました。
消化にはどれくらい時間がかかるのだろう。あんなものを体に含めたままで、どこまで行けるもんだろう。小川の上下、石垣をのぞき込みながら、「もういなくなったね、すごいね」と（う）と話しながら、帰っていきました。

Crab
Peering into certain part of the road,
the kids gathered on its sidewalk.
They were saying something, and
more kids joined the crowed, and
some of them looked shouting.
Oh, it seemed that I stepped in.
Can't forget their screaming smiles,
which was warm - just like hot rice.

It was under a small bridge over a small river just in front of Kanman-beya, where I saw a snake swallowing a mouse.
I thought that was a dead snake whose body was torn off and the organs came out. Moreover, it looked like some parts went rotten and swelled. Yuck! - I passed it once, but changed my mind that it would be cleaned by birds if I pulled it out. So I went back and looked it again. Well, what I thought organs were actually the tail and legs of a mouse, and what I thought was a swelling was actually the body of the mouse inside the snake's body.
"We have never seen such thing - let's go and observe it!" Along with Wakana, Umeo and Sukla, we were gazing under the bridge. Our neighbors asked us what's going on when they passed by. I explained, and they said "wow!", "I've never seen it either!" etc... It seemed quite rare even for those who have grown up here.
We had to leave for some appointment, so we couldn't see the end of snake's meal. However, in a short period of time, the legs of the mouse were swollen. When we were back later in the day, snake itself had disappeared.
How long did it take to digest the mouse? How far could it move with such a big belly? "It has already gone! it's amazing!", I was telling Umeo, looking around the river, then we went back home.
