 When we were having dinner on 1st Jan 2012, I saw a man with a guitar in silhouette behind the door. Then 6 Masayang-guys (Philippine agricultural trainees living in Masayang House near our house) came in to give a new year concert! They said this is a new year practice in their area: visiting house to house to perform songs and music wishing everyone a happy new year. At the beginning, Umeo and Sukla were just observing what was going on, but soon they also started dancing and singing. At the end, it was quite hard to convince Umeo to stop singing. Then, they took Yuki to their house for a drinking party. This is how we started our new year.  Most of the farmers here take the new year off until 3rd of Jan, and so did Yuki. During these days, we had lunch and dinner at someone ot the other's house most of the time because when we visited neighbors to greet them, they were so happy and didn't let us go. Yuki was offered Sake, Shochu, Beer etc...one after another, and was totally drunk by the time we headed for home every day. As for me, it was so nice talking to Ozora and his mother over the phone. He is one of my best friends and with Down's syndrome. I know him from elementary school, and I think he is one of my roots in creating my personality, in a sense. According to his mother, he decided not to go to the workshop (an establishment to enable disabled people to receive an income by providing simple manual labor) and stayed at home for a year, but recently he joined another workshop and liked it very much. When the mother asked him what he likes about the new place, he said "because they said I can be as I am". Hummm...this is it! I was so moved and missed him so much. What he said has become my cherished words for this year. Now, after the new year holidays, we are back to usual days; Yuki goes to the fields and I work at home and play with kids. Compared to the last new year season when we had just moved into this house, we are very much settled and relaxed now. Let us see what happenings will be waiting for us this year and what we will feel about it. Wakana  こうして始まった新年 元旦の夕食時、玄関の向こうに、ギターを持った男のシルエットが映るのを見ました。 すると、６人のマサヤンズ（フィリピンからの農業研修生で、マサヤンハウスと名付けた家に自分たちで暮らしている）がどやどやっと入ってきました。新年の歌を運んで来てくれたとのことでした。彼らの地元の習慣で、年始には家々を回って歌や音楽を披露し幸福を祈るというのがあるそうなのです。まさか、ここで家々を回るなんて彼らがするわけないのですが、ノリでここならいけると思ったのでしょう。嬉しいですが！ 最初は何が起きているのか、じっと見ていたうちの子どもたちも、途中から一緒に歌い踊りだし、最後は「もう終わりだよ」と（う）を説得するのに一苦労する始末。そして彼らや、（ゆ）を連れてマサヤンハウスでの飲み会へと戻っていきました。我が家の新年は、こんな風に始まりました。 ここらの多くの農家は、三が日はお休み。（ゆ）も然りです。思えば、昼食も夕食も、挨拶に行った近所の家々でお呼ばれして頂いていることが多いのがこの年始休み。今年も行く先々で、（ゆ）は日本酒、焼酎、ビールと次々つがれ、帰るころにはベロンベロン。 私はというと、年始に友人の大空とそのお母さんと電話で話せたのがとてもよいものでした。私の大切にしている友人の一人で、川崎で小学校からの幼馴染です。今の私の性格を作った根となる人の一人だと思います。お母さん談ですが、ダウン症の大空は一年くらい前に、それまで通っていた作業所にもうい行きたくないと言いだし、ずっと家にこもっていたそうなのですが、最近別の場所に行ってみたらすごく気に入ったとのこと。理由を尋ねると「そのままでいいっていうから」ですって。これなんです。感動して、ますます大空に会いたくなりました。この一年、この言葉を大切にしたいと思いました。 さて、年始のお休みも終わり、私たちもいつもの生活サイクルに戻りました。（ゆ）は山へ行き、私は家事と子どもと遊ぶ日々。でもちょうど一年前、この家に移ってきた時を思うと、今年はそれでも落ち着いている方かしら。毎年予期せぬ出来事が起こる我が家ですが、今年は何が待ち受けていることやら。そんなことを思いつつ、2012年をスタートさせました。 （わ）
