品種品目が少なく、栽培面積もわずかなため、週のほとんどは他生産者の手伝いに行きます。基本的には農業研修を積んだ齊藤さんのところへ行くのですが、このところは、収穫期を迎えているポンカンの栽培面積が大きいSさんの手伝いに行っていました。齊藤さんも尊敬している、この地域の柑橘栽培を長らく引っ張ってきた、ベテラン中のベテランです。
大きなポンカン畑は、僕たちの住む集落からわずかな距離です。家の裏道にある倉庫にいったん集合して、畑に沿った道路に乗り付けます。 本当に大きなポンカン畑。平成3年の台風19号の後に植え替えた成木園です。伸びた枝先に実がたくさんついて、垂れ下がっています。地面から手の届くところはそのまま、届かなくなるとビール瓶のケースを踏み台にして、それでも掴めない場所は梯子をかけて上ります。朝から昼まで、昼から夕方まで、ずっとポンカンを摘み続けます。 倉庫に集合して畑まで軽トラで乗り付け、ひたすらにポンカンを採り続ける。4人がかりで5日やっても、まだ終わりません。樹形も変わり映えのないポンカンの樹。知らず知らずに、だんだん頭がおかしくなっていたようです。 この日はSさんを手伝う、ひとまず最後の日。頭がおかしくなっていたというのは、たった一週間の手伝いなのに、もうずっと、一ヶ月くらいポンカンを収穫していたような気になっていました。翌日からは、また齊藤さんのところへ行くことになっていましたが、ずいぶん久しぶりに感じられます。実際は、一週間前まで齊藤さんの手伝いをしていたというのに。 退屈で辛い日課を繰り返しこなしているようですが、それは、しっかりした考えに基づいて、樹の一つひとつを育ててきたという証拠。何より、あの台風19号で壊滅したこの畑の、これだけの面積に苗木を植え直し、ここまで育てたということ。そういう畑で過ごす時間は、少なくとも今の僕にとっては、名著に出会い、その中のとびきりの言葉を見つけるような、かけがえのない体験です。 （ゆ） Ponkan I take care of only a few kinds of citrus fruits by myself, and its area is not so big and I work with other farmers in their fields most of the days in a week. Basically, I help Mr. Saito who has trained me for the last two years, but I have worked for Mr. S recently, whose fields are huge. He is an expert farmer who has has been leading in citrus fruit cultivation in this area for ages and whom Mr. Saito also respects a lot. His huge Ponkan field is not so far from where our houses are. We gathered at his garage in a back street of houses and drove to the field. It IS a huge Ponkan field. The trees are mature and were replanted after the huge damage of typhoon No.19 in 1991. The branches outstretched, heavily laden with fruits. If we could reach the fruits while standing on the ground, that was fine, otherwise we used beer containers as steps. For the ones on much higher branches, we had to use a ladder. From early morning to noon, then until evening, we kept on harvesting Ponkan, Poknkan, and Ponkan. Gathering at the garage, driving to the field, and harvesting for hours and hours. Four of us repeated these actions for as long as 5 days, but still more Ponkans were left in the field. Ponkan trees look similar to each other, and maybe that's also a reason why I went a bit crazy. It was supposed to be my last day to help Mr. S. I have worked in his field only for a week, but I felt it was almost a month! That's why I said I went a bit crazy. I was supposed to work with Mr. S from the next day again, but I really didn't feel that it was just a week ago when I worked with him last time. This may sound like we, farmers, do some boring and hard routine jobs. However it is a kind of proof that each tree has been growing based on firm beliefs. For example, after the horrible damage of typhoon No. 19, widely replanted baby trees are now very mature. This is an obvious proof that he has been growing them with a firm belief. Spending time in such fields is, at least to me now, such a precious experience like reading a great book to find out an excellent word in it. Yuki |
