I've never imagined what kind of person could be a captain to the South Pole.
Uncle-K visited Kanman-beya, along with his wife, being interested in the old construction of Kanman-beya and the way we live there. He is one of my father's cousins working in Tokyo, and I had never seen him before, then suddenly he planned to visit us during his vacation in Shikoku area. He is the professor of a national university, a geophysical scientist having much experience of staying at the South Pole for research. However, he is interested in architecture and his dream still, is to be a carpenter. We have welcomed various kinds of people here, but he is indeed another unique guest. His wife is a retired dentist, and we were curious about her as well. We were not sure if they would enjoy our place here or not, but offered citrus-field-tour and dinner with us. They reached here in the afternoon and left after dinner. They are a friendly and gentle couple. During their stay, he kept exploring every corner of Kanman-beya and seemed to be considering something. When they were leaving he said that he was going to retire quite soon, then he would move to Beppu of Kyushu, so he would like to come and visit here again. They are most welcome anytime, and he may bring his own carpentry tools, I thought. Later, several picture books were delivered, which were gifted by Mrs.K, and we got an order of Amanatsu from Mr. K. Thank you so much! Whatever stories they told us were totally new and stimulating, and we get a kick out of those; that's why we can't just stop welcoming guests here. Wakana 南極探検隊長 南極探検隊長になる人って、一体どんな人なんだろうか。そんなことあまり思ったこともなく生きてきました。 Ｋオジサンが奥さまを連れて「かんまん部屋」を訪れたのは、古い建物と私たちの暮らしぶりに関心を持って、とのこと。初めて会うその親戚の伯父さんは、私の父の従兄弟の一人だそうです。夫婦での四国旅行のついでに、ふと思い出して立ち寄ってくれたそうなのです。聞けば、Ｋオジサンさんは地球物理学者で国立大学の教授。これまで調査で何度も、南極に滞在してきたとのこと。そんなオジサンの今の夢は、大工になること・・・ これまで色々な人をここでお迎えしてきましたが、これまたユニークなお客さまです。奥さまは歯科医で、もう引退されたとか。私たちはむしろ、そんな夫を持つ彼女にも興味を持ちました。夫妻がここを楽しんでくれるのかどうか見えないところがありつつも、みかん山ツアーと夕食でお迎えしました。昼過ぎに到着して、夕飯後には宿へ戻る、という短時間滞在でしたが、明るくて親しみやすい人たちでした。 うちにいる間中、Ｋオジサンは家の隅々をきょろきょろ見回し、探検しています。どうやら、家のあちこちの作りを丹念に眺めているよう。帰る直前にオジサンが言うには、もうすぐ定年して別府に暮らすようになるので、またちょくちょく来させてもらいたい、とのこと。それはそれは、いつでもどうぞ、と応えながら、次は大工道具でも持ってくるつもりかな、なんて考えていました。 後日、奥さまから絵本のプレゼントが届き、Ｋおじさんから甘夏の注文をもらいました。ありがとうございました！彼らが聞かせてくれたどの話も、私たちにとっては新鮮で刺激的なものでした。そんな出会いがあるから、お客さまをお迎えする交流は、やめられません。 （わ） |
