この時期にみかん山で気をつけなければならないのは、マムシ、スズメバチにアシナガバチ。
マムシが一番危険なように聞こえるかもしれませんが、マムシは動きが鈍く、さらにお互いに存在を気づいても向こうが逃げ腰になるのが常で、危害を加え続けなければ攻撃的になることもほとんどありません。案外気楽な相手です。 嫌なのはむしろ蜂たちです。摘果作業のときに、樹の中へ不用意に手を突っ込んで巣に触れようものなら、この手に数匹の蜂が飛びついてきます。この痛さは刺されたことのある者にしかわからないものです。用心が要ります。 とか言いながら、作業着やはさみ、のこぎりなどを保管しているこの住宅備え付けの物置には、アシナガバチが作った巣をそのまま生かしてあります。ごるぽっこの子どもたちには「こっち来んなよ」とたしなめつつも、僕は毎日この巣を眺めています。 巣は2つあります。5㎝ほどの小さな巣の頃は、見ていると留守番の蜂がじっとこちらを睨んで隙を見せません。それも最近じゃ巣も大きくなって仲間も増え、僕の存在にもすっかり慣れた様子です。少し顔を近づけたくらいでは、お構いなし。もちろんそれ以上の干渉はこちらもいたしませんが。 この日の朝のこと。 寝床から下りてきて、いつも通り玄関のドアを開け、台所の窓と、物置のある裏庭のガラス戸を開けて、涼しい空気を取り込みます。テレビをつけ、天気予報を見ます。ちゃぶ台を前にして座ると、物置を小さく叩くような音が聞こえてきます。 「なんだ、雨か？」と空を見上げても、何もありません。良い天気です。気のせいかと取り直し、問題のなさそうな天気予報に見切りをつけ、仕事着に着替えに裏庭へ向かいました。 すると驚いた。アシナガバチの巣が、スズメバチに襲われている。 一方はもう襲撃が済んだ後のようです。ボロになった巣の近くで、生き残った一匹が呆然と留まっています。 もう一方の仲間の増えた巣が、まさに襲われています。先ほどの雨音は、スズメバチとアシナガバチが格闘する中で物置にぶつかった音だったようです。 思わず着替えるのを忘れて見入ってしまいました。 この時には、もう、何もすることができず、巣の周りでそわそわとするアシナガバチたちに感情移入してしまう。すると勇敢な一匹が立ち向かっていきます。びくともしません。というより、相手にすらされていない。蜂の子が一匹、プラスティックが溶けたように丸くなって、それを夢中になって食べている。   ［スズメバチ来襲（写真左）］ ［勇敢なアシナガバチがスズメバチに向かっていく（写真右）］ ようやく着替えることを思い出し、物置から出てほどなくすると、スズメバチが飛んでいきました。すぐ中をのぞいてみると、アシナガバチたちが巣に集まって活発に動き始めています。死んだ蜂の子の残骸があります。勇敢なアシナガバチがあいつを追い出した、ということでしょうか。 場所を覚えたスズメバチはまたやってくるでしょうか。蜂の子はまだ何匹も生きています。夕方には餌を運んできたアシナガバチを見かけました。   ［襲われてボロになってしまった巣の無残な姿（写真左）］ ［復活したもう一方の巣の様子（写真右）］ （ゆ） Dangerous guy In this season, there are some insects which you need to be very careful about in the citrus fields: adders, hornets, and paper wasps. You may think that adder is the most dangerous among them, but it's actually not. They are slow and usually back away from humans passing by. Unless you keep harming them, they won't attack you. Rather, bees are troublesome. For example, while picking, if you put your hand into trees carelessly and touch their nidus, several of them will attack the hand. You have to be very cautious...you will know when you experience the pain. However, there are two niduses of paper wasps in my small garage where I put work clothes, scissors, saws etc. I noticed them sometime before but just let them be. When kids come close, I just tell them not to go too close to them, but as for me, I enjoy observing these niduses every day. When they were as small as 5cm, bees who are looking after the nidus, used to give me the stink eyes and never let me come close. But now, one of the niduses is much bigger and the family has grown up, and they seem to be getting used to me. Even if I move my face closer to the nidus, they don't pay any attention. Of course, I don't interfere wtih them any further though. Things happened one morning. I woke up, came downstairs, and opened the door and windows to let the cool air in, as I do every morning. Then I turn on the TV to the check weather forecast. When I sat near a low dining table, I heard small sounds of hitting in the garage. I looked up the sky wondering if it stated raining, but it was a clear sky. Well, maybe the sound was just imagination...I turned off the TV and went outside to change into work clothes. What made me surprised was...the nidus of paper wasps had been attacked by a hornet! One of the niduses had already been attacked. A paper wasp, who survived, was near the nidus looking stunned. I saw that the other nidus was just being attacked. The sound, which I thought was rain, was indeed of them fighting and bumping against the garage wall. I watched the battle intently. I empathized with paper wasps who couldn't do anything but move very nervously around the big hornet. One brave paper wasp braced up to the hornet, but he was not even given attention. A larvae of paper wasp, curled up in a ball like melted plastic, was being eaten. At last I remembered that I had to change clothes. When I stepped out from the garage, I saw a hornet flying away. I looked inside once again, then found a group of paper wasps working hard, gathering the damaged nidus. There were some dead larvae left. I thought the brave one might have chased off the hornet. The hornet may come back as he now knows the place. There are still many more larvae that have survived. That evening, I saw paper wasps carrying foods into their home. Yuki |

おおっと、もう刺されちゃったよー。みかん山でだけどね、物置のと同じ黄色いアシナガバチでした。
物置の巣は、元気を取り戻して、また少しずつ大きくなっているよ。あれからスズメバチはやってきていないようです。
