The much awaited Warabe-Donguri Matsuri (acorn-kids festival), the biggest school festival at Umeo and Sukla's elementary school, Hayakawa Kita Elementary School, was here!




The festival is a kind of cultural cum sport festival in which kids perform dances, songs, play, unicycles and so on. Among those programmes, the play and unicycle performances are something special for them. The elementary school puts in a huge effort for the play, and it's especially about folk stories connected with Hayakawa town. What is unique about their folk tale-play is that kids actually go outside the school and visit local old people to interview about local traditional stories in the area. Kids take notes, and start making the scenario from scratch by themselves!

Of course, teachers will help them, but isn't it an interesting experience for them staging a play by researching the story...yes, this is the tradition of their elementary school. Actually, Umeo really wanted to come to this school because she loved this activity since she first heard of it. When kids started practising the play, Umeo and Sukla practiced every day with their lines trying to speak in the local accent, which was really difficult as far as I could hear them...!
Since there are only 13 kids in total, each of them have to play more roles than one. Umeo was the main storyteller and a villager, and Sukla was a Sumo wrestler and.... a stone Jizo (guardian deity of children)!! Both of them seemed be proud of playing those roles, and Sukla asked Yuki to shave his head to look bold, so that he thought he looked more like real Jizo. What a spirit of actor, ha! Well, what was funny was that 4-year-old-Makasa was so excited about the shaved head, that she insisted Yuki to shave her head too. Yuki hesitated a bit, but Makasa claimed that she had to do this like Sukla as well....then, here you go! She loves her new hair style and coordinating with her girlish clothes....she looks cute, indeed!



All kids performed extremely well, and received a big applause. Those who interviewed the kids were invited, and they seemed enjoying it a lot.

As for the unicycle performance, it was so amazing! Specially because I knew that Umeo and Sukla had been struggling hard trying to ride the unicycle - something that they never did before. All 13 kids did so well, and I saw tears in many of teachers' and parents' eyes. It was raining from the morning on that day, and if it continued raining, the unicycle performance had to be canceled. Everyone wished that the rain would stop, at least for some time...and finally, in the afternoon, it actually stopped! I think 13 Teru-teru-bozu (a paper doll to which Japanese children pray for fine weather) that Umeo made and put every kid's name on them worked well..!

　


About a couple weeks later, another cultural festival was staged by the people of Hayakawa town as whole. Students of Hayakawa Kita Elementary School was invited to perform a play on the stage in front of an audience, so they were quite excited. Beside the play, Umeo and I were supposed to perform Narada-Oiwake-dance with other Narada people. We were as many as 20 including Sukla this time! Having watched Umeo practicing hard, Sukla had got interested in dancing too. He tried catching up with Umeo, and Narada people accepted his efforts. So, we were on the same stage - Umeo and Sukla as dancers, and I as a Shamisen player.

Thinking back, it's just amazing that we just came here only this April not knowing anyone and anything cultural about Hayakawa or Narada, but by living and participating, we are actually entering into the Hayakawa world, I guess. Having stood and performed on the two stages, I hope the kids are now proud of being here...

舞台の上


とうとう「わらべどんぐり祭り」の日がやってきました。（う）と（す）が春から通っている、早川北小学校（北小）の学園祭です。

このお祭りは、文化発表会と運動会を一日にギュッと濃縮したような、北小の伝統行事であり、一年のうちで最も大きな行事です。子供たちの踊りあり、歌あり、劇あり、そして一輪車あり、と満載のプログラム。中でも、劇と一輪車演技に特に力が注がれます。劇というのは、民話劇で、なんと子供たちが実際の集落に民話の聞き取り調査に繰り出すところから始まるのです。班に分かれておじいちゃん、おばあちゃんの話を聞き、メモをとります。内容を持ち寄って、一から台本作りをするというのだから、すごい。先生方の上手なサポートがあってこそとは思うものの、何とも貴重なプロジェクトなのでしょう。そう、これが北小の伝統というから恐れ入ります。実際のところ、移住先を検討している時期にこの民話劇の取り組みを耳にした（う)が、目を輝かせたところから我が家の早川への移住計画が動き出したのかもしれません。毎日、セリフの練習に励む（う）と（す）でしたが、地元の、しかも昔風の言い回しやアクセントに大苦戦。読み合わせに毎日突き合わされて、私も毎日聞かされる（ま）ですらも、台本をすっかり覚えてしまうほど。前項で児童１３名の北小ですから、各自が２，３の役を担当します。（う）は、ナレーターと村人と山士を、（す）はお地蔵さんと力士です。（その配役だけで、十分面白いのですが）二人ともそれらの役がとても誇らしいようで、（す）に至っては、お地蔵さんになりきるために、当日の前夜に丸坊主にしてほしいと頼んでくるほど。（す）の役者魂だけでもいい話題になるのに、（す）がバリカンで刈られていく様子をじーっと見ていた（ま）が、次は私、と後ろに並んで待っていた姿にわずかな戸惑い・・・。さすがに初めは躊躇していた（ゆ）でしたが、（ま）が泣きわめいてせがむので、「ま、いっか」とおそろいの頭になりました。ご満悦の（ま）です。このヘアスタイルに、お気に入りのフリフリ服を合わせたいのだとか。洗いやすく、乾きやすい点にも毎日感動している様子です。誰に何をコメントされようが、本人はお構いなしに嬉しそうです。ジェンダーを超えた、（ま）という存在に、まさに脱帽。



本番の舞台では、どの子もとっても輝いていて、大きな拍手をもらっていました。子供たちから取材を受けた地域のおじいちゃんおばあちゃんも招かれていて、嬉しそうに手をたたいていた様子が印象的です。

一輪車演技はというと、これまた感動ものでした。みんな、すごい。特に（う）と（す）に関しては、初めての一輪車に苦戦して、春から練習に明け暮れてきたのを知っているので尚のことなのでした。朝から雨が降っていたこの日でしたが、午後のあるタイミングで雨が止まったのを見計らって、グランドで演技。もしあのまま雨がやまなかったら、一輪車演技は中止だったというのです。朝から祈って祈って、（う）は前夜作った13個のテルテル坊主を学校に持って行って吊り下げて、そうしてついに雨が止んだ時には、みんなとても感激しました、よ。13人全員が一つになって、観客席にいた先生や保護者の多くの涙を誘いました。


それから2週間ほどして、町内全体の文化祭というものが催されました。北小の子供たちは、民話劇披露で出演です。今度は町内全体の人たちの前での演技なので、子どもたちもちょっと違ったワクワク感があったようです。劇も見事やり遂げて・・・実はまだ午後からも出番がありました。なんと奈良田追分で熱海にまで行った白樺会のメンバーとして、今度は奈良田の民謡の披露です。今回は（す）も奈良田の2人の中学生の兄ちゃんたちも猛特訓をして、浴衣姿で舞台の上へ。ちなみに私は、師匠のMさんと他3名と一緒に三味線です。実はこつこつ続けてきた練習の末、恥ずかしながらも舞台の上へ。我ながら、怖いもの知らずって強いなぁ、と。とほほ

考えてみれば、この春奈良田にやってきたときには、知り合いもなく、早川のこと奈良田のこと、何も知らずに飛び込んだ私たち。まさに、手探りで暮らしながら、体を動かしながら、一つ一つ扉を見つけてきたような。私にとっては、まだ入り口にっているだけのような状態ですが、春から何周りも大きく成長した子供たちは、晴れ舞台を二つも踏んで、今何を感じていることでしょう。
