仔牛近道

The smell of Kinmokusei, or orange osmanthus, in Akazawa rang the bell inside me telling the start of Autumn, I felt. I was sitting at a cafe, Shimizuya, facing holy mountains, enjoying fine coffee. Makasa was sitting next to me being busy eating a mountain-grape-ice cream.



Blue sky, green mountain with a bit of yellow and red among green already. What a nice tea time I had! I was happy also because finally I found my favorite wooden soup cups and bought them on the very same day. Getting cold these days, we really needed wooden cups instead of ceramics to keep Miso-soup warm on the dining table. We had been seeking through the Internet, but suddenly Yuki remembered the local craftsman inside Hayakawa town itself! That' why I was in Akazawa, south part of Hayakawa town. Those cups are just perfect in size, color and the fact that we know who created them was great.



Coming back home, Makasa had fallen asleep in the car and continued sleeping even at home. Yes, it was a great timing for me to finish picking Myoga, or Japanese ginger, and Shiso (Japanese herb) seeds in my garden. They WERE simple tasks but the quantity was quite large. I have been a big fan of Myoga since I was a child, so just by looking at the color of Myoga and inhaling the smell of it, I was so happy...



Nuts in mountains also tell me that the season is changing these days. I got to know how walnuts looked like on a tree, and how great Onigurumi, or Manchurian walnuts tasted! It was also exciting to know how Tochi seeds, or Japanese horse chesnuts, had to be treated for eating. Knowing about Tochi seeds, I opened the famous Japanese picture book "Mochi mochi no ki", in which Tochi tree plays an important role and motivated Makasa to go for picking them.

Mr. M has been the one who always navigates us in exploring Narada culture, specially wild food and animals. He is a head of Shirane-kan, an traditional spring inn, which is something to be proud of as residents of Narada. He is almost my father's age and so active and enthusiastic about cultural things! Our kids are all big fans of him especially because he is happy to take them feeding his hunting dogs. Four Kai-dogs, Japan's natural treasure, are his hunting partners, and they are kept in such a beautiful open space in a mountain. Makasa loves feeding them with her hand, and she keeps talking to them in such a friendly manner every time she goes there.



When I completed picking Myoga and Shiso seeds, Mi-san brought a bowlful of his fresh Maitake, or Grifola frondosa, that contributed to making our dinner table more colorful! The color of the mountain, the smell of air, interactions with neighbors, and gorgeous seasonal dishes....I'm so full in my heart and stomach. I shall digest them well and be ready for the chilly season to come.

緑とオレンジのあいだ


赤沢地区でふわりと香った金木犀に、秋が来てるよ、のベルを鳴らされた気がしました。清水家さんにて、巡礼地である山々を臨める席で、コーヒーを飲みながらだらーっとする。隣で（ま）が山ぶどうアイスを真剣に食べ続けている、そんな素敵なお茶のひと時。

　青い空、緑の山々に黄色と赤が見えだして、4歳の（ま）風の言い方でいうと、「うーん、しゅわわせ（幸せ）！」この日ご機嫌だったのにはもう一つ理由がありました。ここの所ずっと探していた木のお椀。なんとここ赤沢地区でお気に入りのものを入手。涼しくなってきて、陶器のお椀では味噌汁が冷めてしまうことが気になってきた今日この頃。我が家の冬支度第一弾、木製の器を入手する！が叶った記念すべき日なのでした。インターネットではおしゃれな木製の食器はいくらでも見つかるのですが、どれが良いのやらよくわからぬまま。するとある日ふいに、（ゆ）が赤沢地区の木工房「淳司」さんを思い出したのでした。あらやだ、町内にいるじゃないの！と足取り軽く、（それでも町内最北の奈良田から、ほぼ最南の赤沢まで車で50分かかるのですが）工房を訪れた後の、コーヒーでしたのでなお格別だったというわけです。色よし、サイズよし、お値段よし、作家さんの顔も分かり、いうことなしです。


　帰り道の車中で（ま）は眠りにおち、家について座布団の上に転がしても起きません。しめた、とばかりに私は庭仕事にかかります。まだ取り残しているミョウガとシソその実がたくさんあって、気になっていたのです。単純仕事なのですが、量があるのでなかなか大変です。それでも子どもの頃から大のミョウガ好きだった私にとっては、香りに包まれながら、あの何とも言えないピンクの色をザルにどんどん集める作業は至福の時。

　そういえば、木の実も秋の訪れを教えてくれています。クルミがどんな風に木になっているのかを初めて知りました。そして日本のオニグルミが何とも味わい深いものであるかも。また、栃の実の途方もない下ごしらえの手順を知り、唖然ともしています。『モチモチの木』を（ま）と一緒に読み返し、一緒にモチモチの実を拾いに行こう、と盛り上げています。



　こういう奈良田の山の美味しいもののこと、特に野生のもののことは、たいていMさんから教わります。Mさんは奈良田が誇る白根館の社長で、優しい目をした切れ者、私の父と大体同じくらいの年齢です。我が家の子どもたちも皆、Mさんが大好きです。というのも、毎日お昼には、近くの山で変われている4頭の猟犬へのエサやりに連れて行ってくれるのです。この4頭の甲斐犬（国の天然記念物）がまた素晴らしくかっこよく、またつながれてはいるものの、切り開かれた山の斜面で、自由度高く木漏れ日の中を走り回っている彼らの場所は、いつ行ってもうっとりしてしまいます。夏休みが終わっても、（ま）だけはお昼についていける特別な身。最近は手のひらで餌を食べさせることに熱心です。一生懸命、犬に何かをずっと話しかけている様子もけなげです。

　ちょうどミョウガとシソの実を採り終えたころ、届いたのは初物のマイタケ！2軒隣のMiさんのニコニコ顔付きです。これで食卓が一層鮮やかになりました。山の色、空気の匂い、ご近所さんとのやりとり、季節の食材・・・ああ、胸いっぱい腹いっぱい。しっかり消化して、寒い季節に備えることにしよう。
