こんなことを言うと怒る人もいるのですが、「後は野となれ山となれ」ということばが好きです。
学生の頃、「地域づくりインターンの会」という取り組みに参加していました。地域づくりに評価の高い、特に農山村の地域に、2～3週間を目安に学生を送り込む事業です。派遣学生として3年間参加し、北海道のニセコ町へ2回、3年目は愛知県の豊根村に入りました。
最後の年は、修士論文も書かなければならなかったし、何かと大変なので、本当はこの事業に参加するのも辞めようと思っていました。ですが、この会のOBで、仲間内からも慕われている人に「よろしくね」と肩を叩かれ、えいやっ、で学生事務局長も引き受けることになってしまいました。
しかしそのおかげで、事業の課題も分かってきたし、また3回目ともなると、派遣学生として自分が何をすべきか、何ができるか、よく見えていました。豊根村に滞在している間はとても有意義で、何より、自由で幸せな時間を過ごしました。
そしてこのたび、この地域づくりインターンに参加した学生、あるいはそんな学生の仲間を通じて豊根村に縁が出来た人たちで、同窓会を開きました。会場は豊根村。みんな集まれの呼びかけに、それならばと、僕たちはこのイベントを初めての家族旅行として位置づけ、十数時間車を走らせて、文字通り馳せ参じました。
Mさんのところも訪問しました。インターン生として豊根村に入ったのは10年も前のことになりますが、その時、トマト農家のMさんの家に一週間泊まり込みで、トマトの仕事の手伝いをしていました。これが僕の初めての農業体験です。
Mさんは、僕が農業をしているということよりも、家族を連れてきたことを喜んでくれました。それが何よりも嬉しかった。突然の訪問にも関わらず、生のトマトと自家製ケチャップで、その場でミートソースにして、スパゲッティのお昼までご馳走になってきました。
とても大変だったけど、参加できてよかった。同窓会前後の日程でも、新しい出会いや発見があり、大きな優しさに触れました。
これが野であり、山であろうと思います。野であれ山であれ、素晴らしい風景が広がっていることがある。そんなことは、予想して始めるものではないと思うのです。

After me the deluge
Some may become upset, but I like the words "After me the deluge".
When I was a university student, I was engaged in activities called "Community Development through Internship Project". This was a project to send students to rural areas that had been successful in community development. They were sent usually for a few weeks. I was sent three times; the first and second year to Niseko in Hokkaido, and the third year to Toyone in Aichi prefecture.
In the third year, I was thinking of not joining this project because I had to work on the master thesis, which made me really busy. However, one of our favorite seniors said "All the best (for the third year)!" and asked me to be a student director.
It made me busy, but thanks to this opportunity, I got to understand challenges that the project was facing, and also as one of intern students, I learned what I should do and what I could do. It was so meaningful to me during my stay in Toyone, and more than anything, I had such a happy time there.
Recently, an alumni event was organized in Toyone, gathering people who were associated with the projects. Various people were invited, and I decided to take my family too. We considered this trip as our first family trip, and drove more than ten hours to get there!
We visited Mr. M, too. When I was in Toyone as an intern ten years ago, I stayed in his house and worked in his tomato fields, which was my first agriculture experience.
Mr. M was pleased to know that now I'm a farmer, too. But more than that, he was happy to see that I brought my family, which made me really proud. Though we visited him without any appointment, he and his family welcomed us with a special lunch: meat sauce pasta with fresh tomato and hand-made-tomato ketchup.
Long time driving was really tough, but it was a right decision to participate with my family. We met friends and relatives both on the way to Toyone and back, and we were impressed by their warm hospitality too.
This is the "deluge" I'm talking about. A wonderful view may appear after the deluge, which we don't need to guess before taking any decisions and actions.
