Dealing with our kids' pee and poo, I get to know the power of making something into a habit.
When I was talking to Miyuki-grandma a couple of months ago, she told me the story about her children and grandchildren who didn't need nappies for long. It was amazing that one of them didn't need nappies anymore than when she was 6-MONTHs-old!
What Miyuki-grandma had been doing was quite simple: letting them pee and poo at the toilet (or into a bucket or garden ground directly) since they could hold up their heads. She said that it didn't work well at the begining, but soon babies started learning and waiting for their nappies to be taken out.
I was shocked by this story and soon wanted to try it with Sukla. The first thing to do was to know how often he pees. It's actually every 30 minutes. I started letting him pee into a bucket (since our toilet is outside!); it was amazing that he did it the very first time, which encouraged me alot.
Since then, I wear a wristwatch to check the time. Indeed, 30 minutes passes so fast, but now I got used to it. Thankfully, baby Sukla doesn't wet his nappy unless I forget the timing.
As for Umeo, she is doing her best ( I believe!) putting her favorite sticker on a calendar every time she could pee at the toilet. I wish I had known Miyuki-grandma's method when Umeo was a baby in Kolkata though..!
Well, sooner or later both of them would say good bye to their nappies. So, let me take it easy, and I shall rather enjoy the view with the nappies hanging on the line for some more time.

「ちょんぴ」とは（う）語の「おしっこ」のことです。子どもたちのおしっこやうんちと毎日付き合っていて思うことは、習慣にすることの威力。
2か月ほど前に、みゆきバアちゃんから聞いた話が衝撃的でした。彼女が子守をしてきた子どもや孫たちは、皆オムツ離れが早かったとのこと。一番早い子で、生後6か月でオムツ要らずだったとか。
みゆきさんがやっていたこと自体は極めてシンプル。おしっこの時間に、オムツを外してトイレ（あるいはバケツやそのまま庭に）に向かってオシッコを促すだけ。それを首が座る頃からやっていたというのです。始めはもちろん上手くいかないけれど、そのうちオムツを開けてもらうまで、待つという話でした。
この話に衝撃を受け、すぐに（す）に試してみようと思いました。まずしたことは、彼のオシッコの時間や頻度を知ること。すると、30分おきだということがすぐにわかりました。嬉しかったのは、最初に挑戦した時に、見事にオシッコが出たこと。これで、がぜんやる気が出たわけです。
それ以来、腕時計を付けています。30分は、あっという間ですが、今ではもう慣れてしまいました。今では、私が時間を忘れなければ、（す）はオムツを濡らすことはあまりないようになりました。
（う）も、頑張っています。最近は、トイレでオシッコが出来たら、お気に入りのシールをカレンダーに貼るようにしました。あぁ、（う）がコルカタで赤ちゃんの時も、みゆきバアちゃん方式を知っていたらなぁ。
遅かれ早かれ、二人ともオムツ離れをする日はくるはず。だから、焦らずに、むしろオムツが干してある今の庭の景色を楽しむくらいでいよう、かな。
