インド・コルカタ滞在中に縁のできた欧米系NGOのプロジェクトで、『コルカタ塗り絵 A to Z』（仮タイトル）の下絵を担当したことがあります。コルカタや、コルカタのあるベンガル地方を中心としたインドのことを紹介するためのもので、A～Zのそれぞれを頭文字とするキーワードごとに描きました。
けれど残念なことに、僕の描いた絵はこのプロジェクトの趣旨にそぐわない、ということで、すべてボツになってしまいました。宙ぶらりんになっていたこれらの絵は、日本に持ち帰ってからも3年間、戸棚にしまったまま。インドのことに関心のある人が遊びに来たときに、ときどき開いて見せる程度でした。 その絵たちが、ここにきてようやく陽の目を見ることになりました。伊予銀行の高山支店で、しばらく展示されます。ここの待ち合い席は、壁の空いた部分を活用して、ちょっとしたギャラリーになっています。 先日、友人伝いに「ゆうきさん、何か展示するものありませんか？」と聞かれたのがきっかけです。明浜でとったスケッチはすぐあげてしまうのでストックが少ない。そこでふと思い出したのがこのコルカタで描いた下絵たちです。絵を見せると、「あ、バッチリです」とのこと。あっさり。ボツが決まるまでの悪戦苦闘や苦労が阿呆らしいほどです。  この展示のことが、新聞にも紹介されていたそうで、（わ）の同級生たちを見送るついでに立ち寄った池田屋さんでそのことを聞きました。 このシリーズのタイトルを『もっとコルカタ』としました。それぞれの絵には、各キーワードにまつわる僕たちのエピソードを、説明代わりに用意しています。なかなか好評とのこと。この日、別用のついでに立ち寄ってみたら、店員さんも喜んでいました。嬉しいことです。今後少しずつ、このブログのコーナーでも紹介していきたいと思っています。 （ゆ） Kolkata spills out When we were in Kolkata, I joined a project to create "Kolkata coloring book A to Z (tentative title)". It was an inter-cultural project by a Western NGO, and I was invited to join. I made a lot of illustrations. They were meant to introduce India, mainly Kolkata and Bengal, and 27 keywords were selected, each of which started with the alphabets from A to Z. However, unfortunately, they decided that my style of drawing didn't match with the concept of the project. So those drawings had been left up in the air and slept in my closet for three years since we came back from India. The file of 27 drawings was opened only when someone who was interested in India visited us. However, the time has finally come for those drawings to show up in public. They are now on display in the Takayama branch of Iyo Bank, where the waiting space is used as a small gallery. It all started from one of our friends who works for Iyo Bank part time. She asked me if I have any drawings to exhibit. Unfortunately, there was a very little stock of sketches of Akehama (because I tend to hand them over to friends as gifts). Then I remembered about those sketches of A to Z series. I just showed them to her, and she said "oh, this is perfect". Her reply was so quick that I felt silly remembering the struggleand so much time taken in the process of consideration and decision for my drawings to be turned down before. This gallery was introduced in a local news paper which we got to know at the cafe, Ikedaya, we went to with friends from Tokyo. I wrote short explanations and our experiences in Kolakta for each drawing. I heard that they were well-received by local people. Even when we visited the bank the other day, they said that they also liked them. That was cool. Yuki |
