仔牛近道

　ある週末の朝、同じ通りにお宅があるFさんが、玄関までやってきて、「鹿の皮、いるかい？」と尋ねてきました。バタバタと子どもたちも皆玄関まで出てきてその会話を聞いています。私は、「…へ！？」とためらいがちに、（す）は「いる！」と大声で返事をしました。



　Fおじさんは、多くは説明せず、欲しかったらやるから取りにおいで、と言って帰っていきました。私のイメージでは、「鹿の解体をしていて、はいだばかりの皮」。用途不明。ひとまず、子どもたちと見に行くことにしました。



　見ると見事な毛並みの鹿の皮が、全身分。裏側はカチカチに乾いていることを確認して、一安心です。昔は山に持っていて敷物にしたりしていたけれど、今回はいらなければ捨てちまうよ、とFさん。自分になめす技術があればなぁ、と思いつつ、また、うちで敷物になるのだろうか、と不安になりつつ眺めていると、横で（す）が目を輝かせて「おじさん、ありがとう！！」と飛び跳ねています。まだ返事してないんだけど！？と慌てて（す）の口を押さえ、（ゆ）に相談することに。屋根を直していた（ゆ）に状況を説明すると、「・・・完全に乾燥してるんだよね？」と念を押されました。



　というわけで、大喜びの（す）が頭に担いで、はしゃいでその辺を一通り駆け回った後、その日から毛皮は我が家にやってきました。始めのうちは、夜中に毛皮が足に触れたりするとビクッとしてしまいましたが、今ではすっかり慣れました。そんな毛皮くんですが、ある日ちょっとした事件がありました。玄関先に置いていたら、しょっちゅう玄関前を横切る2軒隣のMさんが、神妙な顔つきでこう切り出したのです。

「・・・前から気になってたんだが、あれは、カモシカの毛皮ではないのかい？」

カモシカは天然記念物なので、獲って皮を飾っているなんてもってのほか。やっかいなことになるぞ、と心配してくれたのでした。ええっ！とビックリして、よく見てもらうことに。確かに体の毛並みはカモシカに似ているけれど、鬣のあたりの毛は間違いなくニホンジカだと確認が取れ、胸をなでおろしました。

　今ではすっかり馴染んだ毛皮くん。ですが、よくうちに遊びに来てくれる（う）の同級生のMちゃんが、毛皮に寝転んで宿題をしているのを見たときはさすがにびっくりしました。・・・馴染みすぎ！まだまだ片づけ途中の我が家で、定位置が決まるまでは、子どもたちとハムスターがよくいる部屋の床においてあります。そこはまるで、動物部屋であります。

The deerskin


One morning during the weekend, Mr.F, who lives on the same street, came to our door and asked me "do you want a deer skin?". Noticing our conversation, Sukla came down to the door too. I said "....what?", but Sukla shouted "yes, I do!!".

Mr. F didn't explain much but only said "if you want, come to my house anytime." and went back. I thought that he had just finished slaughtering a dear, and the skin was very "fresh". I didn't have any idea about how to use the "fresh" hide. However, I went to see it with the kids anyway.

Here it was! It was such a beautiful, large and DRIED deerskin - of the whole carcass. Mr. F said "People here used to take this kind of hide to the mountain and sit on it, but not now anymore. If you don't take it, I will just throw it away". Wishing I knew the technique of tanning, I was just gazing at it. Beside me, Sukla was jumping here and there with joy and shouting "Wow! Cool" Thanks Mr. F! Yahoo!!" I tried to cover his mouth wondering if this large deerskin would match in our house or not.... We decided to go home at once to get Yuki's opinion. Looking at happy Sukla jumping around, Yuki said "...well, make sure that it is TOTALLY dried". Yes, that's a very important point.

So, Sukla was happier than ever. He covered his body with the skin and ran around the street as if he himself had become a deer. This is how the deerskin was added to our belongings. Before I got used to it, I was so frightened when my leg touched it on the floor, but not anymore. Not only me, but the others seemed to be getting used to seeing the skin in our house. But one day, our neighbor two-doors-next, M-san, asked me with a serious face.

"Wakana-san, may I ask if you don't mind....isn't that the hide of KAMOSHIKA (Japanese serow)?"

KAMOSHIKA is one of the natural treasures and a protected species, so possessing its hide could bring us big trouble. He worried a lot, so I asked him to check it. Observing the hide very carefully, M san finally said "Ah, it's not KAMOSHIKA...! The fur of its body really looks like it, but mane is certainly a Japanese deer's". ....Thanks goodness!

As for now, the hide is very much a part of our household. I couldn't stop laughing when I saw M-chan, Umeo's classmate, lying down on the skin with her one day and doing her homework . We are still organizing the house after having moved in, so the regular position of the hide has not been decided yet, so for now, it's on the floor of where kids and Umeo's hamster usually stay. Well, the room looks like a room for ANIMALs indeed. ...Not bad!
