I've been using hand-made beeswax lip balm, which I found in a small shop when we were visiting our family friend in Okayama. Since then the small bottle has always been with me, especially in the dry season, and even Umeo loves it. However, it's almost over, and I'd started wondering how I could get another bottle of beeswax..

Last year, when I had helped our neighbors with their bee-keeping, I saw the beautiful and almost mysterious honey combs. I also got to know that beeswax balm is indeed made from these. I had known, but only recently, when my own beeswax bottle was getting empty, I started thinking seriously about trying to find out how to make it.

Actually, the process is quite simple! The question is how to get some honey combs out of which the honey has already been squeezed out. We have the advantage of getting these from our neighbors. They use some of it to get beeswax that is used to apply on their wooden hives to attract more honey bees. Furthermore, one of my neighbors keeps these somewhere in his garden to attract wasps that come to eat honey bees. What does he do with wasps? He catches them and soaks them in a bottle of Shochu (distilled spirit) so that the liquid turns into a great antidote for bee stings. However, they never used these honey combs for cosmetic purposes, for which I really need them now!



The process is very simple: boil it with water to melt the honey combs; filter to separate impurities; mix with your favorite vegetable oil, and bottle it. That's it! The most challenging part is the melting point of honey combs, (that is made of wax) which is as high as 65℃., which means it solidifies quickly and sticks on to the pot in which it is boiled and also coats the mixing spoons. It's nearly impossible to remove them unless you melt them once again. I shouldn't flush it down a drain because the solidified wax would choke it. Well, since beeswax is edible, I don't care so much even if some of it still remains on my utensils though...!

　

So, here is my beeswax. I played with labelling it with an interesting hand drawing that Makasa had made before. I scanned it and added pink cheeks on the face and named it the "MakaWaka" brand, hah! This is totally for my own satisfaction, but at the same time, this is a product to be proud of, which was made during the precious leisure hours of Makasa and myself. Umeo helped me a lot in making labels, so my special thanks to Umeo as well!



Along with the large size (and also very good value) bottle of maple syrup, you can also find our beeswax balm with MakaWaka label either at our residence, Kagiya, or Shirane-kan. Well, necessity is the mother of....action!

みつろう遊び －その１


　何年か前、岡山県に友人一家を訪ねた時に、小さなお店で手作りの蜜蝋リップバームを買いました。しっとり感と素朴な感じが好きで、いつも鞄の中に。特に冬は大活躍で、（う）も使い始めたこともあり、もう容器が空になってしまいそう。さぁ、なくなっちゃったらどうしましょう。どこで買おうか・・・。


　去年、ご近所のおじさんの庭先養蜂を見たり手伝ったりした際に、生まれて初めて見た実物のミツバチの巣。なんとも綺麗な、神秘的な正六角形のまとまり。蜜蝋バームが、まさにこの巣からできていると知ったのもこの時でした。その時は「へぇー！」どまり。けれど、使い切り寸前の今、ようやく具体的な作り方に関心が向いたのでした。必要は、行動の母なり！

　

　調べてみると、ハチミツを絞った後の巣が手に入りさえすれば、作り方は至って簡単！ご近所さんがもういらない、という搾り済みの巣をもらってくることのできるこの環境は、自作蜜蝋バームには持ってこいでした。もちろん、庭先養蜂をしている近所のおじさんたちも、蜜蝋を活用しているようです。肌につけるものとしてではなく、巣箱に塗り付けて蜂を誘引したり、熊を獲る仕掛けに入れておいたりするそうです。あるいは、庭先にポンと置いておいて、そこに集まるミツバチを狙うスズメバチを、パチンと叩いて気絶させ、箸でつまんで焼酎瓶に入れていく・・・そんなスズメバチの焼酎付けは、ハチに刺されたときの素晴らしい薬となります。このように、おじさんたちの蜜蝋の用途は、豪快。クリームにしたときの保湿効果抜群、なんていう話が新鮮がられるほどでした。

　作り方は単純で、巣を水と一緒に火にかけて溶かし、不純物を取り除いて、好きな植物油と混ぜるだけ。これだけ！なのですが、使用した鍋やお玉にすぐにこびりついてしまうのが要注意。油ではなくロウなので、洗剤ではおちません。融点は65度らしいので、もう一度お湯につければすぐに溶けるのですが、そのまま流しに流すと、管の中で冷めて固まって詰まってしまうだろうから恐ろしい。なので庭先に流すか、食べられるものだからそのまま気にせず料理に使うか。この日は、庭先で鍋を火にかけていたら、案外時間がかかったので、火の横でお昼を食べることに。そこら辺の山菜を食べならが、蜜蝋が溶けるのを待ちました。



というわけで、オリーブ油やココナッツ油と混ぜて好きな硬さに調整して、みつろうバームの出来上がり。3歳の時に（ま）が裏紙に描いた絵で、私が気に入ってとっておいたものが、ここに来てラベルとして大活躍することになりました。MakaWakaというブランド名を付けて出来上がり。自己満足のラベル遊びですが、（ま）とのお散歩の日々から生まれた産物でもあるので、誇らしいアイテムでもあります。ラベル作りでは、4年生の（う）が楽しんで手伝ってくれました。（う）にも、特別のありがとう。



　大き目ボトルのお徳用メープルシロップも瓶詰し、それにもMakaWakaラベルを貼りました。こうした遊び心を面白がってくれる鍵屋さんや白根館さんもちょこんと置いてくれています。ラベルになった（ま）の顔を見てみて下さいね。
