春頃、友人から、本を作るのでその挿絵を描いてほしい、という依頼があり、取り組んでいました。つい先日、とうとうその役目を終えました。
彼女はコルカタに住んでいるときに知り合った人で、僕が描きためていたスケッチやイラストを気に入ってくれていました。彼女が編集する別の本でも、そのいくつかを利用してくれたことがあります。
本の内容は、詩のような、彼女の短いエッセイをまとめたもの。絵の手掛かりになるのは、送られてきたベンガル語の本文と、たった一行の英語の要約のみ。辞書を片手につかみどころを探ります。
実際に手を動かすことができるのは、雨続きでまとまった時間のとれるときなので、点数はさほど多くないのに長い時間がかかりました。イメージがなかなか掴めず、畑で仕事をしながら考えていることもよくありました。
色つけは時間を忘れるほど楽しいものですが、一生懸命絵を描くのは、どちらかと言えば、しんどいことだとあらためて気づきました。場所も文化も、気候も異なり、時差もある中ですり合わせていくのは、思いのほか大変なことでした。締切のない珍しい仕事でしたが、イラストレータというものの難しさも垣間見ることができたような気がします。
この仕事を通じて、今の自分の絵の限界が見えてきました。それはとても刺激的なことでした。
さて、どんな本に仕上がるでしょうか。
下の絵は表紙のために描いたものですが、途中で残念ながらボツになってしまいました。本の紹介までに、ここに転載します。

Bengali book
That was around last spring, when one of our friends in Kolkata asked me to draw some illustrations for her book. Since then, I'd been working on it, and finally got done a few days ago.
We met her when we were living in Kolkata, and she found my sketches and illustrations in my sketch books and really liked them. She even took some of them for another magazine that she was editing at that time.
The book that I'd been working on is like a poetry book or something like a short story book. For my work, what helped were original Bengali stories and one line (only ONE line, though!)summary translated in English. Flapping a dictionary, I spent quite some time to understand the thoughts of each poet/essay.
I can actually work on drawing only when it rains, so having had a 'not-raining-hot summer', it took such a long time to complete. I spent a difficult time trying to understand the concept of some stories, and then I kept thinking about them even while working in the citrus fields.
Coloring up one's own drawing is so much fun that I sometimes forget about the time, while drawing is really tough; that was what I got to learn through this work. It was more challenging than expected because we worked on this project together over different places, cultures, climates, and time zones. She didn't give me any deadline, that is quite rare though, but I think I got to know how difficult a professional illustrator's work is, to some extent.
Through this project, I came to see the limitations of my own drawing, which was really stimulating.
Now, let's see what kind of a book it will turn out to be.
